RRS is proposing to build a Waste Treatment Facility and Visitor and Education Centre at Sinfin Lane in Derby, which will recycle some materials before using a proven gasification technology to generate renewable energy from the leftover, non-recycled waste.
This facility will be served by three regional Waste Transfer Stations across Derby and Derbyshire. These Waste Transfer Stations will be used to transfer waste collected from refuse collection vehicles onto bigger vehicles for onward disposal to the Waste Treatment Facility or landfill. The use of bigger vehicles helps to reduce carbon dioxide levels as fewer vehicles are needed to transport the waste.
Over the last few months, RRS has been listening to the views of the local community and stakeholders on its proposals for new waste facilities in Derby and Derbyshire.
During March 2009, RRS held four public information days across Derby and Derbyshire which around 250 people attended. People also contacted RRS via the community information line and project email address, with questions and comments about the proposals.
Following the public information days, RRS submitted planning applications for:
The planning application for Sinfin Lane was submitted to Derby City Council in May 2009 and has been refused. RRS has lodged an appeal with the Planning Inspectorate against the decision and a Public Inquiry is expected to be heard in September 2010. The two Waste Transfer Station applications were submitted in April – Magfern's Yard to Derby City Council and Clover Nook to Derbyshire County Council. RRS has now secured planning permission for these Waste Transfer Stations.
An additional Waste Transfer Station is needed to serve the north east of Derbyshire and RRS is proposing to upgrade the existing MXG Waste Transfer Station at Mansfield Road in Corbriggs, near Chesterfield.
Following an engagement programme, which included two public information days in September 2009 which were attended by over 80 people, RRS submitted its planning application to Derbyshire County Council in January 2010.
All comments and feedback received during the engagement process have been included in a Stakeholder Engagement Report, which has been submitted alongside the planning application. This will inform Derbyshire County Council of how we have involved and informed stakeholders and interested parties on our proposal.
As part of the planning process, you can comment on the proposal directly to Derbyshire County Council who are undertaking their own formal consultation.
