Derby and Derbyshire residents and interested parties will be given the chance to find out more about proposed new waste facilities in Derbyshire.
Resource Recovery Solutions (Derbyshire) Ltd, a partnership between United Utilities and Interserve, was recently chosen as the preferred bidder by Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council for their joint waste management contract.
The contract includes the development of two new waste facilities – a Waste Treatment Facility and Visitor & Education centre at Sinfin Lane, Derby and a Waste Transfer Station (used to transfer waste collected on refuse collection vehicles onto bigger vehicles for onward disposal), at Clover Nook in Alfreton, Derbyshire. The state-of-the-art recycling and treatment facility proposed at Sinfin Lane will divert approximately 180,000 tonnes of waste (the equivalent weight of around 23,904 double decker buses) from landfill and generate enough electricity to power 14,000 homes.
A temporary Waste Transfer Station will also be provided at Magfern's Yard, Downing Road in Derby and a future application for a Waste Transfer Station in the Chesterfield area is also proposed.
Blair Marriott, Project Director for Resource Recovery Solutions, said:
"Over half of the rubbish produced in Derby and Derbyshire in 2007/8 was sent to landfill. This is not only expensive but also harmful to the environment. Reducing, reusing and recycling can only go part of the way in dealing with the rubbish we produce. New facilities are needed to deal with this growing problem."
"Before we submit planning applications for all of these sites we will be informing and involving the local community and interested parties.
"We fully understand that local people will have a number of questions about our proposals and we want to provide information and give everyone the chance to give us their feedback".
Resource Recovery Solutions will be holding public information days in Derby and Derbyshire at:
Resource Recovery Solutions will also be distributing newsletters to local residents and businesses, providing information packs and setting up a Community Liaison Group for the Sinfin site.
