Benefits

These facilities offer a number of benefits:

  • Providing an alternative to mass landfilling which is no longer ethically, environmentally or financially sustainable
  • Diverting around 180,000 tonnes (equivalent to the weight of 23,904 double decker buses) of waste from landfill
  • Assisting in reducing Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council's carbon footprint – saving over 48,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, as calculated by the Environment Agency's WRATE (Waste and Resources Assessment Tool). The equivalent of taking more than 16,000 cars off the road each year
  • Helping the Councils avoid significant fines if they don't meet strict targets to reduce landfill – which could see Council Tax increase
  • Meeting Landfill Allowance Trading Scheme (LATS) targets each year up to 2020 and beyond
  • Offering value for money
  • Representing an investment of £500 million in Derby and Derbyshire
  • Helping the Councils exceed their joint recycling target of 55% by 2020
  • Allowing energy to be recovered from the waste left over after recycling has taken place, generating enough electricity to power 14,000 homes
  • Using proven technologies for waste management
  • Redeveloping a contaminated site at Sinfin Lane
  • The Waste Treatment Facility will create 38 operational jobs and 60 to 80 local construction jobs.

What happens to the waste?

All waste delivered to our centres is separated and sorted. This makes sure that as much of the waste as possible goes for reuse. Reusing items is the best way environmentally for dealing with waste before recycling and composting. Items for reuse may go for resale through a variety of outlets including charities and other markets. Finally waste which can't be reused or recycled/composted goes for disposal.

If you have any concerns about your waste being treated in this way, please speak to one of the site attendants who will deal conscientiously with any items of a personal nature.

Waste Transfer Stations

Waste Transfer Stations will be used to transfer waste collected from refuse collection vehicles onto bigger vehicles for onward transfer.

All handling of most wastes will take place inside enclosed buildings and waste will not be stored or handled in the open air. The buildings will be designed to minimise and control any smells and waste delivered to the transfer station will be loaded onto larger trucks for onward transportation within 24 hours, but usually within several hours. The facilities have also been designed to minimise noise and there will be no waste processing or sorting machinery on the site.

Household Waste Recycling Centres

Working together with Derbyshire County Council and Derby City Council, we operate the Household Waste Recycling Centres listed below.

The centres will remain the places where you can take items from your own house which may be too large or bulky to be taken by your normal kerbside waste collection. There is no charge for disposing of your waste at these centres.

Compost produced in Derbyshire, using some of Derbyshire's waste is available to buy at some Household Waste Recycling Centres in the summer months, subject to availability.

All our sites recycle as much as they can. All waste delivered will be separated and where possible recycled, re-used or composted.
